As Earth Day approaches, we reflect on the solutions our Digital Fault Recorders can provide applications in the renewable market including wind, solar, hydro, wave, tidal, geothermal and biofuel applications.

Our Fault Recorders are designed for traditional Power Utility Markets (Generation, Transmission, Distribution and Industrial) and Distributed Generation Renewables. Many Distributed Generation Renewables are connected to the grid through electrical lines on the lower voltage distribution network presenting them with many of the same problems traditional utilities face. We are dedicated to providing renewable energy sources with fault recorders that capture all of the BES anomalies associated with inverter-based technologies through advanced monitoring features. These features include:

  • Multiple recording modes that capture high speed transient faults and long-term disturbances
  • A future proof modular design that allows you to scale for any application size
  • 100% software configurable with no jumpers or switches
  • Up to 512 samples per cycle
  • Continuous Transient Oscillography (CTO)
  • 2 GB working Ram per Module
  • Up to 2 TB solid state drive storage

In addition to monitoring for faults, monitoring the Power Quality ensures a safe, stable and reliable grid. Devices can be damaged or completely stop functioning if the power quality is bad. For example, solar panels connected to the low-voltage networks will result in over voltages or switching the frequency of converters in wind turbines can cause high-frequency signals to flow into the grid. Our Fault Recorders are Class A Power Quality Recorders up to the 128th Harmonic. They record automatically with logs that store records of Flicker, imbalance, frequency and steady state RMS voltage/current. The data can be retrieved and displayed graphically on the display station analysis software using preconfigured templates for voltage sags and swells, harmonics and comparisons to PQ standards (IEC-61000-4-30 Class A compliant).

As you look to how your renewable application operates and connects to the grid, consider the benefits our TR-3000 and DR-300 Fault Recorders can provide your application in monitoring for faults, long-term disturbances and Power Quality.
